  • Complex regional pain syndrome: Also called CRPS, this rare condition develops when an injury causes extensive nerve damage. The resulting pain is out of proportion to the injury itself.
  • Facet joint syndrome: This arthritis-like condition causes degeneration and pain in the facet joints, which allow the spine to twist and turn.
  • Painful peripheral neuropathy: This occurs when nerve endings are damaged but continue sending pain signals long after the condition causing the pain has passed.
  • Painful diabetic neuropathy: When diabetes attacks the nervous system, it may cause pain and other sensation anomalies known as diabetic neuropathy.
  • Peripheral neuralgia: Also known as peripheral neuropathy, this pain is the result of damage to nerve endings in the hands and feet.
  • Phantom limb pain: This pain feels like it originates from a limb or body part that was amputated. Its true point of origin, however, is in the central nervous system.
  • Pinched nerves: When a bone, piece of cartilage, muscle, or tendon puts pressure on a nerve, it can disrupt the nerve’s function and send false signals of pain, tingling, or numbness.
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy: Also called RSD, this disorder arises when damaged nerve endings send false pain signals.
